Principal Cherry Tingle said:

“I am absolutely delighted that all the hard work and dedication of our amazing staff team has been recognised through these awards. The staff at the UTC all work incredibly hard and support each other as a really effective team and this leads to excellent results for all our students. Through partnership with our employer partners such as Morgan Sindall we also ensure that all our leavers go on to great apprenticeships or university.

“I am especially pleased that the work of a member of our support staff has been recognised. Jo worked at the UTC since it opened and always had time for every member of staff, student or parent. Very sadly Jo passed away earlier this year but she will never be forgotten. She was inspirational and the UTC really is a dimmer place without her light.

“There are insufficient words to describe Kerryann Wilson, who won the best Teaching Professional Award. She is, quite simply, the very best teacher I have ever had the great fortune to work with. Every single member of our staff really is very good, but Kerryann’s teaching and dedication to students is truly exceptional. It is perhaps best summed up two of her students:

‘Miss Wilson is amazing. Before I came to the UTC I couldn’t do English – now I love it and will get a good grade – and that love of English will never leave me now.’

‘Miss Wilson is like the best teacher in the world combined with the scariest. She makes sure we love English but we also know that if we didn’t work hard in her lessons things would not be good – in fact – I don’t want to think about that. We work hard for her and for ourselves because she believes in us – and because she believes in us we start to believe in ourselves.’

“We must not forget the other finalists who, despite not winning an award, did really well to be both nominated and ranked as finalists.”

Our other finalists were:

Best Industry Engagement Initiative for Morgan Sindall’s massive contribution to our UTC, including a range of employer projects and sponsorship. Morgan Sindall staff work with our students throughout their time here and ensure they have direct experience of work and help them gain apprenticeships.

Jacob Leach for the Best Student Award for balancing his hard work at the UTC with his swimming career, for which he competed in the Commonwealth Games last year.

And lastly we were also delighted to be a finalist in the Best Secondary School category which is a fabulous recognition as a direct result of every single member of staff working together to achieve the very best for all our students.

“I am humbled to work with such an amazing team.”

Cherry Tingle, Principal
