YEAR 12 STUDENTS TRAVEL TO AUSCHWITZ Details Wednesday, 18 October 2017 On Tuesday 10th October 2017 Head of Year 13 Mike Fox travelled with two Year 12 students, Bradley Smith and Nereis Cherry, to Auschwitz, Poland. The trip included: • a visit to the town square of Oswiecim (renamed Auschwitz by the Nazis) to learn about events in the town during the German occupation • a guided tour of Auschwitz I o it held about 16 thousand prisoners (roughly 10 thousand Jews, 4 thousand Poles, and 3 thousand prisoners from other ethnic groups). • a guided tour of Auschwitz II – Birkenau was the largest of the more than 40 camps and sub-camps that made up the Auschwitz complex. It opened as a branch of Auschwitz in March 1942, and served at the same time as a centre for the extermination of the Jews. o Attendance at a memorial service to commemorate the 6 million Jews murdered. This was part two of a four-part program organised by the Holocaust Trust. Part one, Monday 2nd October 2017, involved preparation for the trip to Auschwitz, including meeting Eva Clarke, a holocaust survivor. Part three, Sunday 15th October 2017, will be reflecting on the visit and preparing for part four. Part four will consist of presentations and projects being run by the students as they work towards becoming Holocaust Ambassadors.
