Student Loses Nearly 5 Stone | Times & Star

A teenager from Cockermouth has a new-found spring in his step after losing almost five stones.

Josh Hempton, 17, lost 4st 11.5lbs, reached the final of Slimming World’s Young Slimmer of the Year 2020 competition and even met Olympian and Strictly Come Dancing winner Louis Smith MBE.

Josh joined the Cockermouth Slimming World group to feel more comfortable with his size.

He said: “I knew my weight was an issue, and I was starting to become increasingly unhappy. I would feel uncomfortable in my clothes and I’d started to make excuses not to go out with my friends because I often felt self-conscious.

UTC Work Life New Experience | Times & Star

Working as an office manager and principal’s executive assistant at the Energy Coast UTC has been a rewarding learning curve for Laura Devlin who has previously worked in mainstream schools.

The technical college in Lillyhall, Workington, prepares 14- to 19 year-olds for a career in industry.

Students work with the organisations that they hope to work for in the future such as Morgan Sindall, Iggesund Paper Board, the Royal Navy and Sellafield Ltd.

Energy Coast UTC was awarded Best Secondary School 2019 in the Golden Apple Awards on Friday. It also won the Best Industry Engagement Award for their work with Morgan Sindall and Highly Commended Best Community Initiative.

UTC nominated for prestigious awards | Times & Star

A technical college and secondary school in Workington has been shortlisted for three prestigious awards.

Energy Coast UTC of Lillyhall has been nominated for 'education's Oscars' the national Pearson Awards. They are the only school in the country to be nominated in three categories, and the only one in the county to make it to the shortlist.

College donate protective equipment to NHS staff | News and Star

A technical college in Workington is helping to provide NHS workers with Personal Protection Equipment to fight the spread of the Coronavirus.

After the Energy Coast UTC, of Lillyhall Workington, was forced to close it’s doors, staff and principal Cherry Tingle decided to focus efforts on supporting the fight against Covid-19.

UTC have donated hundreds of their goggles and face masks to NHS staff to help fight the spread of the virus.

Staff have also been using the college’s high-tech facilities to 3D print more protective equipment for doctors and nurses.

Bright future for Cumbrian students with new outreach programme launch

Students from across Cumbria are exploring future options thanks to impartial support and activities from a higher education and skills partnership led by University of Cumbria.

The Cumbria Collaborative Outreach Programme is the partnership of universities, further education and skills providers across the North West region led by the University of Cumbria. It has been working together to build a network and deliver impartial advice, guidance and activities to 33 schools and colleges in Cumbria through the Hello Future targeted outreach programme.
